United Airlines is revamping its loyalty program by emphasizing the importance of holding their co-branded credit card to earn and redeem miles effectively.

Key Changes in MileagePlus Program

  • Starting April 2, United will implement significant changes, favoring cardholders over non-cardholders in earning miles.
  • Travelers without a United credit or debit card will experience reduced earning rates, while cardholders can earn double the miles per dollar.

United's chief commercial officer, Andrew Nocella, stated that the program aims to reward loyalty, providing the best benefits to their top customers.

Cardmember Perks

  • Cardholders will now enjoy exclusive perks like a minimum 10% discount on award flights and access to premium business class seats.
  • General MileagePlus members will no longer earn miles on basic economy tickets unless they have a qualifying co-branded card.

The airline is encouraging users to opt for their financial products to maximize rewards and value from the MileagePlus program.

  • For non-cardholders, the base earning rate on standard tickets is reduced from five to three miles per dollar.
  • United plans to showcase the benefits of having a card through their app and website, nudging non-cardholders to apply for one.

While current cardholders will see increased earning potential, casual flyers will receive fewer rewards, with the changes set to take effect in April.
