Legal Trouble for Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce Over Trademark Issue
Kansas City Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, along with their business partner Noble 33, are facing a lawsuit from a sneaker company for alleged trademark infringement at their restaurant, 1587 Prime. The sneaker company, 1587 Sneakers, claims that the restaurant's name infringes on theirs.
According to the legal complaint reported by ESPN on February 20, 1587 Sneakers began selling shoes in April 2023, before Mahomes and Kelce opened their restaurant. However, the sneaker company only applied for the "1587" trademark in October 2025, while Mahomes and Kelce applied for their trademark in December 2023.
The sneaker company's trademark application is in the clothing category, while the restaurant falls under the bar and restaurant category. A trademark attorney mentioned to ESPN that the similarity in marks raises questions of potential consumer confusion between a shoe company and a restaurant.
1587 Sneakers also alleges apparel infringement as the restaurant sells clothing alongside food, leading customers to believe there is a connection between the two businesses. Co-founder Adam King expressed a desire for an amicable resolution to the matter.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are currently in their offseason recovery following a challenging season for the Chiefs. Mahomes is focusing on recovering from an ACL tear, while Kelce faces retirement rumors after a disappointing season where the team missed the playoffs for the first time in several years.
Notably, 1587 Sneakers appeared on the show "Shark Tank" in 2024 but did not secure investments. Meanwhile, Mahomes and Kelce are dealing with personal and professional challenges as they navigate their respective recoveries and future career decisions.
