Austrian bobsled pilot Jakob Mandlbauer was hospitalized after his bobsled overturned during a run at the 2026 Winter Olympics on February 21.

The crash happened during the four-man final's second heat. Mandlbauer's three teammates escaped unharmed, but he was immobilized and taken to the hospital after medics assisted him for about 20 minutes.

Christoph Iglhauser, the Austrian team press attache, confirmed that Mandlbauer sustained no serious injuries and was hospitalized for precautionary measures.

Details of the Incident

Mandlbauer, conscious throughout, complained of neck pain and was able to move his arms. The sled lost control mid-run, flipped over with the athletes inside, and caused damage to the track.

The crash led to a track repair delay, and the other three teammates received treatment at the scene. Mandlbauer was taken to the same hospital where U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn was treated for an injury earlier.

Since Mandlbauer's sled didn't finish the run, his team is out of the competition. The final runs are scheduled for February 22.

Reactions and Support

Former Olympic bobsled star John Jackson expressed concern for the athletes' safety and emphasized the sliding community's unity in ensuring well-being.

Greg Hackett from Great Britain highlighted the risks of the sport and expressed relief that Mandlbauer could move after the crash.

Two more crashes occurred during the second heat involving the French and Trinidad & Tobago teams, with all athletes walking away unharmed.
