UGA Basketball's Touching Tribute to Kara Braxton After Tragic Passing
The University of Georgia basketball team paid tribute to former player Kara Braxton following her passing at the age of 43. Before their game against the University of Florida on March 1, the team honored Braxton, a key member of their 2004 Elite Eight team.
After leaving UGA in 2004 due to multiple suspensions, Braxton was drafted by the Detroit Shock in the 2005 WNBA Draft. She went on to win two WNBA Championships with the team, which later became the Dallas Wings.
Braxton tragically died in a single-car accident in Georgia on February 21. She failed to maintain her lane, leading to a collision with a concrete median wall. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital in Marietta, Georgia.
Following her passing, former teammate Plenette Pierson shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, reflecting on their time together with the Shock and the New York Liberty. Braxton, originally from Michigan, retired from basketball in 2014 and worked for Nike in Oregon before relocating to Atlanta.
Survived by her husband and two sons, Braxton left behind a lasting impact on the basketball community. Her son, Jelani Thurman, recently won a national championship with the Ohio State Buckeyes football team and will continue his senior season at the University of North Carolina.
Former LSU football player Devonta Lee also tragically passed away at 26 after battling cancer. Lee won a national championship with LSU in 2019 and was remembered for his resilience and dedication to the game.
Jelani Thurman, Braxton's son, spoke fondly of his mother's influence on his athletic career. Inspired by her commitment to education, Braxton returned to Georgia to complete her degree alongside Jelani's academic journey.
