A man from New York was arrested after allegedly strangling his father to death during a physical altercation that stemmed from a verbal argument, as reported by the police.

Hans Knickerbocker, initially charged with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation in connection with his father Philip A. Knickerbocker's death on February 25, faced a second-degree murder charge two days later, according to the New York State Police.

The deadly incident between Hans and Philip occurred in Hermon, following a marital dispute involving Philip and his wife at their home in Russell, according to court documents revealed by WWNY-TV.

Philip allegedly poured coffee on his wife's head and attempted to strike her before Hans attacked him by hitting and strangling him, leading to Philip's death from strangulation, confirmed by the state police.

Hans, aged 40, was taken into custody, and during an arraignment in Canton Court, he was detained without bail at the St. Lawrence County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings.

If convicted of second-degree murder, Hans could face a minimum of 15 years in prison up to a maximum of 25 years to life, according to the Law Offices of Jason Goldman, emphasizing the commonality of such charges in New York.

Second-degree murder is described as intentionally causing the death of another person, making it a prevalent form of homicide, as outlined by the law firm.
