Germany in Spotlight After Trump's Surprising Origins Revelation
Donald Trump sparked confusion online when he mistakenly claimed that his father was born in Germany, despite Fred Trump being born in New York City.
Trump made the comment during a press meeting in the Oval Office on Tuesday with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where discussions mainly revolved around tensions in the Middle East following a joint US-Israel military operation against Iran.
At the press conference, Trump criticized the UK and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for initially denying the US access to military bases for strikes against Iran. Starmer later permitted the use of bases for defensive purposes.
Trump, expressing his connection to Britain, mentioned his Scottish-born mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, and incorrectly referred to his father being born in Germany, emphasizing his affection for the country.
However, Fred Trump was born in New York City, not Germany. Trump's grandparents, Frederich Trump and Elizabeth Christ Trump, were the German-born immigrants in the family's lineage.
Trump previously made the same error in 2019 during a CBS News briefing, claiming his father was German. In the recent press meet, he also announced halting trade relations with Spain for not supporting the US military operation in the Middle East.
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez strongly criticized the US strike on Iran, asserting his country's commitment to values and interests over fear of retaliation.
