Florida Woman, 20, Faces Charges for Allegedly Allowing Newborn to Drown in Toilet
Anne Demegillo, a 20-year-old woman from Florida, has been indicted for allegedly giving birth to her baby in a toilet and letting the newborn drown.
According to the State Attorney of Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit, the incident took place in Demegillo's home on March 5, 2026. She claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy.
After the baby drowned, Demegillo cleaned up the birth blood, placed the baby in a duffel bag, and then buried her in a shallow grave. Detectives found concerning internet searches on her phone.
Indictment and Legal Proceedings
During a court appearance on March 12, Demegillo's attorney argued she has no prior convictions or mental health issues and is not a threat. She was released from jail but later indicted on charges of murder, child abuse, and failure to report the death.
Sheriff Rick Staly expressed shock over the case, questioning how a mother could allow her newborn to die in such a manner. Demegillo's arraignment is scheduled for April 21.
