Chocolate Giant Promises Real Ingredients in Reese’s by 2027 Following Public Outcry
The Hershey Company is responding to criticism from fans and the founding family by announcing a return to using real chocolate in Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups from 2027.
Complaints arose over the use of "compound coatings" instead of traditional chocolate in seasonal items like mini Easter eggs. Hershey plans to revert to their classic milk chocolate and dark chocolate recipes to enhance their lineup, including making Kit Kats creamier and using natural colors.
Family Pressure and Quality Concerns
The decision was influenced by an open letter from Brad Reese, the grandson of H.B. Reese, questioning the company's changes to the iconic brand's ingredients. Brad criticized the newer, cheaper recipes, stating they were far from the original and not edible.
Hershey initially defended the recipe changes as necessary for innovations, but a 25% increase in their R&D budget and public backlash indicate a shift towards addressing quality concerns seriously. The company aims to meet evolving tastes and preferences while ensuring consumer satisfaction.
Commitment to Quality
Although the full transition to "real chocolate" will take until 2027, the move signifies Hershey's willingness to listen to feedback and prioritize the integrity of their products, even for major candy manufacturers like them.
