A U.S. Army staff sergeant is advocating to prevent his wife's deportation after she was detained by immigration authorities at a Louisiana military base shortly after their marriage.

Staff Sgt. Matthew Blank, 23, brought his wife, Annie Ramos, 22, to Fort Polk to initiate her military benefits and apply for a green card.

Ramos entered the U.S. in 2005 when she was a toddler. Her family reportedly missed an immigration hearing that year, leading to a final removal order.

DACA Status in Limbo

Ramos applied for DACA in 2020, but her application has not been processed due to legal challenges to the program.

Blank stated that he thought bringing his wife to the base for immigration procedures was the right thing to do.

Recent changes in federal policy no longer consider military service by a family member as a factor in immigration enforcement decisions.

Impact on Military Families

The Department of Homeland Security clarified that individuals with prior violations are not exempt from enforcement actions as per the current policy.
