Washington DC’s National Mall has been shut down and people are being evacuated as a massive storm approaches the city.

Organizers urged guests to take shelter.

“We are temporarily pausing the event. For your safety please proceed to the nearest exit immediately. Take shelter in your vehicle or a nearby permanent building,” an announcer told attendees.

Thousands of spectators, who waited in line for hours to get through security when the gates opened at 5 pm, were told to leave immediately and head to nearby federal buildings.

Flashes of lightning and gusts of hot wind pounded the area as National Park personnel guided people to the exits.

It is unclear when the Salute to America celebration will continue. President Trump is scheduled to speak at 9:45 pm.

Organizers said nothing had been canceled as of 7:45 p.m.

“The safety of our guests, performers, and staff is our top priority,” said Freedom 250 Spokesperson Danielle Alvarez

As guests made their way to the exits, the planned flyovers continued. Trump’s new Air Force One buzzed the crowd as they sought shelter.

There are several federal office buildings and Smithsonian Museum buildings near the National Mall where guests are being told they can wait out the storm.

The capitol is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9 pm ET.
