Chaos in France: Unrest Escalates as Riots Erupt Nationwide
PARIS — The Post is on the ground Saturday in the City of Love as thousands of protesters take to the streets across France, breaking out into violent riots for a second straight weekend.
Some 70,000 law enforcement officers were deployed countrywide on Saturday, while the Louvre and several other major Paris museums closed in an effort to prevent renewed violence during planned protests.
Last week devolved into mayhem, with people setting fires, storming public buildings, smashing shop windows, looting and clashing with police. It was France’s most violent unrest in years.

Nearly 1,000 people arrested in nationwide protests
By Katherine DonlevyNearly 1,000 people have been arrested in connection with protests that erupted across France Saturday, officials said.
Nearly half of those cuffed were "rioters" who turned the peaceful protest in Paris into a violent clash with police officers, according to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
“In Paris, we had a major demonstration that took place peacefully, like most protest marches across the entire country,” Nuñez told reporters.
“But as we had anticipated, several high-risk groups formed, consisting of individuals who disguised themselves, mostly dressed in black, radical far-left and ultra-left activists.”
The arrests prevented potential roving protests in the city center, though some looting did occur "in very limited numbers," Nuñez said.
There were also “no targeted attacks” on public buildings such as town halls and police stations, as seen last Saturday.
However, security forces faced an “extremely high level of violence ... with projectiles constantly being thrown and mortar fireworks fired.”
In Paris, there were “500 rioters who were absolutely determined to attack internal security forces or carry out looting," Nuñez said.
Just 385 people were detained during last week's riots.
