A married teacher in Australia was on Wednesday sentenced to just over a year in jail for having sex with two teenage students — which she tried to blame on “irresistible” impulses driven by bipolar disorder.
Tayla Lee Brailey, 32, wept as she hugged her parents and several supporters at her sentencing in Sydney on Wednesday — after already having lost her job and her husband after admitting her twisted crimes, Australian outlet ABC reported.
Brailey was first arrested in August 2024 for having sex with a 17-year-old boy in her car, returning to her classes after the sordid hookup.
She was released on bail — just to be busted again a few weeks later when it emerged she’d also touched a 16-year-old student’s genitals in her classroom, an experience that he said in a victim statement still overwhelms him with shame.
Brailey had groomed that younger victim online, according to the Canberra Times, sending him a naked picture of her in the shower and asking, “Do you like what you see?”
She then made him send her a nude in return. “Yum,” she replied to the 16-year-old student. “Stay back with me after school,” she wrote — with them kissing and touching each other’s genitals in her classroom.
“He has been feeling ashamed and had to leave high school before he finished … because of the shame he felt,” the judge, Justice Elizabeth Ryan, said during Bailey’s sentencing.
“He had suffered lack of sleep and flashbacks … he said none of his friends at high school speak to him anymore.”
The judge was told that Brailey was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, creating impaired judgment and increased sex drive, leaving her with an “irresistible impulse” for sex with the boys, as the Australian also reported.
The judge, however, said that while Brailey’s crimes may have been “terrible mistakes,” she “used her position as a teacher … to abuse the trust of two young persons.”
“It is also relevant that she knew what she was doing was wrong but persisted with it,” Judge Ryan said.
“Offences like this cause immense harm to the trust that must exist between families and the education system,” the judge said.
“For these reasons … no penalty other than imprisonment is appropriate.”
Brailey was sentenced to nine months in prison for having sex with the 17-year-old student, and a year for sexually touching the 16-year-old boy, with an aggregate term of 15 months in jail.
She will also be placed on the child protection register for 15 years.
The teacher — who has since trained as an accountant — will be eligible for parole in April 2027.
